Freshman Brittany Klima matched the UC record in the pole vault at the All-Ohio Championships

The University of Cincinnati Indoor Track and Field team will head up I-71 to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the Scarlet and Gray Invitational, the final tune-up before the Conference USA Indoor Championships.

LAST TIME OUT: Shintara Carpenter set a UC record in the triple jump, leaping 40? 10 1/4? to win the event title and lead the Bearcats to a second place finish at the All-Ohio Championships in Akron.

Jo Young continued her stellar season, breaking her own school record in the shot put (48? 9 ??) by nearly two feet to place second. She won the weight throw with a career-best 56? 10 ??.

Top-5 performances in the field events were posted by Renee Hein in the high jump (3rd), Brittney Klima in the pole vault (5th), and Ashley Wilhelm and Ije Obiorah in the long jump (3rd, 5th).

Placing in the top 5 in the track events for UC was Jocelyn Gibson in the 800 meters (4th), Karen Berling in the 5000 meters (4th), and Wilhelm in the 60 meter hurdles (5th).

The relay teams posted solid times, with the 4x400 recording its second-best time of the season (4:00.36) to finish 4th. The distance medley relay team (12:28.01) finished 2nd in its first competition of the season.

Cincinnati finished fourth at the All-Ohio meet last season.

2004 SCARLET AND GRAY: Jocelyn Gibson placed second in the 800 meter run in 2:17.53, bettering her previous season-high by nearly three seconds. Her time moved her into the seventh spot on UC?s all-time performance list.

Erin Leeper moved into a tie for sixth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.07 seconds, and is also tied with Renee Hein for eighth in high jump after both cleared 5? ??.

Tara Meier cleared 10?6? in pole vault, her second best height of the year. Jo Young placed sixth in the shot with a throw of 45? 9 1/4?, while Myers finished 11th, tossing 40? 11 3/4?. Myers is now fifth on the all-time list, improving from seventh. In the weight throw, Young finished 9th with a throw of 55? 9 1/4?, and Myers tossed 47? 5 3/4?, good for 12th.

THROW, JO: Senior Jo Young, the UC record holder in both the indoor and outdoor shot put, has started her senior season strong, capturing six of the eight events in which she has competed. At the Hoosier Classic on Jan. 15, Young won both the shot put and the weight throw. At Bowling Green, she took home the shot put crown, helping the Bearcats to a team championship. Young grabbed both the shot and weight titles at the Fazoli?s Open and won the weight throw at the All-Ohio Championships. Young topped her own school record in the shot put at the All-Ohio (48? 9 1/2?).

COMING UP: The Bearcats travel to Houston, Texas for the 2005 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 25-26.
