Tony Maynard worked 7.2 innings in UC's win Friday at Duke.

DURHAM, N.C.---Tony Maynard threw a career-best 7.2 innings to lead Cincinnati to its first victory of the year, a 3-1 win over Duke on Friday afternoon at Jack Coombs Stadium.

Maynard worked out of several jams during the game, but allowed just one run on 11 hits during the outing to pick up his first win of the season. Josh Kay recorded the final four outs, three by strikeout, to earn his first career save.

The Bearcats (1-3) got all the offense they would need in the top of the first inning, plating a pair of runs against Duke starter and losing pitcher Danny Otero (1-2). With one out, Mark Haske was hit by a pitch and Jon DeLuca then reached on a fielder?s choice with Haske taking second when Duke third baseman Adam Murray tried to get Haske out at second. After Jack Nelson hit into a fielder?s choice that erased DeLuca, Logan Parker lined a single to center that brought Haske in. When Blue Devil centerfielder Corey Whiting let the ball get past him, Nelson also came around to score all the way from first to make it 2-0.

UC added a third run in the top of the third when a Brian Beltz ground out brought home Parker.

Duke plated its sole run of the afternoon in the sixth when Brett Bartles singled home Jimmy Gallagher, after the latter doubled.

On the mound, Maynard capitalized on two Bearcat double plays and a pickoff at first base to make it into the eighth inning. In the eighth, Whiting started the inning with a single, but was erased on a 6-4-3 double play. Gallagher then drew just the second walk issued by Maynard and was followed by Bartles single. Maynard was then removed in favor of Kay and the latter retired Jonathan Nicola on one pitch.

The ninth inning saw Bryan Smith lead off with a walk, before Kay struck out the side to preserve the win for the Bearcats.

?Its good to get the first win under our belts,? said Bearcat head coach Brian Cleary. ?Clearly the story of the day was the pitching of Tony and Josh and our defense. I thought Tony did a great job of making pitches when he was in trouble to get out of jams. Otero pitched well for them too, but I thought we did a good job of standing in and getting good at-bats against him. If we continue to pitch well and play good defensive, we will some games.?

Offensively, DeLuca and Parker each collected two of Cincinnati?s six hits. Duke (4-2) tallied 11 hits on the day, with Bartles leading the way with three and Whiting, Gallagher and Smith all adding two. Otero took the loss, after allowing three runs and five hits in 5.2 innings. Ryan Sember was stellar out of the Duke bullpen, allowing just one hit in the final 3.1 innings.

The two teams will contest game two of the three-game series tomorrow back at Jack Coombs Stadium. Freshman righthander Kevin Schrader will make his second career start on the mound for UC, taking on Blue Devil lefty David Torcise.
