CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team has added four student-athletes to its program for the 2005 season. Local product Jibran Shteiwi, along with Omar Cummings, Landry Gray, and Domninic Oppong will add scoring punch to a Bearcat team that lost its top three goal scorers from a season ago.
"This class really fills our needs," UC head coach Hylton Dayes commented. "These guys are all proven goal-scorers at the high school, club, and junior college levels. We are excited for them to come in as our first class heading into the BIG EAST."
Shteiwi, a 6-0 forward, played in 13 matches at Kentucky, scoring one goal. He was a four-year starter at Summit Country Day, leading the Silver Knights to a state championship during his freshman year. Shteiwi earned all-state and Miami Valley Conference MVP honors as a senior.
Cummings, a 5-10 forward, earned first team NJCAA All-American honors last season at nationally-ranked Cincinnati State. The Old Harbour, Jamaica native also earned first team all-conference accolades as a freshman.
Gray, a 5-8 midfielder from Richmond, Ky., led Lexington Catholic to the 2004 state championship, while being named to the all-state team and the state tournament MVP. Gray played five years for the Kentucky State Olympic Development Program team and led his club team, Javanon, to a regional title in 2003.
A 6-0 forward from Toronto, Ont., Oppong has played for the Canadian Youth National Team as well as the Toronto CS Assurri team and trained in the Ontario National Training Center club organization. He led Cardinal Newman High School to the 2004 TDCAA Championship, while being named the 2004 Male Senior Athlete of the Year.
The Bearcats open their spring season on April 3, as they play host to Northern Kentucky and the USL's Cincinnati Kings at Gettler Stadium.
