COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati women?s soccer team opened its 2005 spring soccer season on Feb. 26 at the Ohio State 7-on-7 Indoor Soccer Tournament. The Bearcats finished fourth in the 24-team field.

The Bearcats opened up the tournament with an overwhelming 6-0 win against the Lansing Revolution. UC goals were scored by Kate Norton (Rector, Pa./Greenburg Central Catholic) and Marie Strelka (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull). Anna Barrett (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's Academy) beat her defender to score UC?s third goal. Andrea Haney (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) found the net twice, one after a pass from Gigi Ernst (Plain City, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and the other on a rebound after a Lauren Buland (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) shot. Strelka and Amy May (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), each of whom missed significant time in 2004 due to injury, scored the final Bearcat goals. Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) earned the shutout in goal.

In the second match of the day, UC and OP-17 tied, 1-1. Ana Farmer (Renfrewshire, Scot./Cardonald Coll.) scored the single goal with an assist from Strelka.

UC dropped its third match, 3-1, against Bowling Green. Strelka notched the only Bearcat goal.

The next match of the tournament saw the Bearcats take on James Madison in the late afternoon. UC won the high-intensity match, 2-1. The first UC goal was scored by Haney off of a corner kick from Buland. Strelka buried the game-winner after a pass from Haney.

The Bearcats shutout Carmel, 2-0, in the quarterfinals. UC?s goals were scored by Jen Leiter (Cincinnati, Ohio/Florida) and Barrett. May picked up an assist on the second goal. The shutout goalkeeper was Jen Doerflein (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton).

UC moved on to the semifinals where they dropped a 4-0 decision in a rematch with Carmel.

?We feel like we had a really strong showing ad that we did well. It was a good starting point for us. I was really pleased with the way the team came out and their attitude,? stated head coach Meridy Glenn. ?I was really happy to see their performance and their confidence.?

The spring season continues for the Bearcats on April 3rd when they host the Bearcat Classic at Gettler Stadium. Participants include Miami (Ohio), Ball State, and the Classics.
