Gallegos, Patrick earn co-MVP honors

Eric Edwards earned the Most Improved Award at the Men's Soccer Awards Banquet

CINCINNATI, Ohio ? Seniors Jeremiah Gallegos (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret) and Wiremu Patrick (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington) were named the 2004 University of Cincinnati men's soccer co-MVPs at the Bearcats' postseason awards banquet on March 6 at the Vernon Manor Hotel.

Gallegos, drafted in the fourth round of the MLS Supplemental Draft, scored seven goals, including two game-winners. Patrick, a second team All-Conference USA selection, led UC with with eight goals and 20 points and finished his career in the top 10 in school history in goals, assists and points.

"The banquet gave us an opportunity to cap off a successful 2004," commented head coach Hylton Dayes. "We were able to recognize our seniors and celebrate their careers here and also reflect on the success our program has had over the past four years."

Freshman Amir Ikner (Olathe, Kan./Blue Valley West), a C-USA All-Freshman selection, was named the team's Newcomer of the Year after starting the final 11 contests of the season and helping the Bearcats to a 5-4-2 record over that span.

Junior Matt Hayden (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) earned the Coach's Award for academic excellence. Hayden was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team and sports a 3.816 GPA in finance.

Senior John Liersemann (Carrollton, Texas/Trinity Christian) and junior Eric Edwards (Cincinnati, Ohio/Country Day) were honored as well, earning the DeCarlo and Most Improved awards, respectively. The pair finished one-two on the team in assists. Liersemann, a second team All-C-USA preformer, finished fifth in C-USA with six assists and completed his career with 16 helpers, good for fifth in school history.

Dayes also named Hayden and goalkeeper Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) team captains for the 2005 season.

The Bearcats will open the home portion of their spring schedule on April 3, as they host the Bearcat Invitational at Gettler Stadium.
