CINCINNATI, Ohio --- Despite two starters missing from the lineup, the University of Cincinnati tennis team pulled off a dominating, 5-2 win over Detroit on Wednesday afternon at Five Seasons Country Club.
The win snapped a five-match losing streak for UC and improved its record to 4-9. The Titans dropped to 6-6 with the loss.
With No. 2 player Hannah Hinton out with an injury and No. 6 Lindsay Brown suffering from bronchitis, the Bearcats were reduced to five players. This forced them to forfeit No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, but UC dropped just one of the matches played to earn the win.
Seniors Samantha Liu and Cristina Reyes teamed for the 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and sisters Jill and Julie Klauck won, 8-5, at No. 2 to pick up the doubles point.
In singles action, Reyes faced the stiffest test, defeating Holly Smith in the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 7-5. Liu moved up to No. 2 singles for the first time in her career and came away with a 6-1, 6-1 win, while Jill Klauck earned her team-best 12th win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Julie Klauck added a straight-set win at No. 4 by a 6-2, 6-0 mark.
Detroit earned its only head-to-head win when Amy Inman defeated Madison Reasoner, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5.
The Bearcats now have a long break before starting their final season of Conference USA play when they take on DePaul in Chicago on April 2.
