CINCINNATI, Ohio---Purdue scored 12 unanswered runs to overcome an early deficit and hand Cincinnati a 12-3 setback in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday night at the UC Baseball Stadium. The Bearcats fell for the second straight game and are now 10-15 on the year heading into a weekend trip to Saint Louis.
The Boilermakers (8-15) needed just 12 hits to produce the 12 runs, taking advantage of a five-run fourth inning and six more runs in the fifth. Allan Donato (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Purdue, while A.J. Upton took the loss for UC.
Brian Beltz and Erik Eitel each continued their solid hitting as of late with a pair of hits apiece. Five Boilermakers tallied two hits each, led by Jeff Mojzik and Spencer Ingaldson who drove in four and three runs, respectively.
The night got off to a great start for the Bearcats, as they scored three runs in the first to jump to the early edge. Mark Haske led off the inning with a double that never left the infield as Purdue third baseman John Hunter couldn?t come up with a pop up and a hustling Haske made it to second safely. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Haske scored on a Jon DeLuca ground out. Mark Muscenti and Eitel accounted for the other two runs with RBI singles in the frame.
Things started to come apart for UC in the fourth with Jack Nelson starting the inning on the hill. After a double steal made it a 3-1 game, Nelson was lifted after allowing two runners to reach. Ingaldson greeted Upton with a three-run homer to right on the first pitch he saw that put the Boilermakers ahead to stay. Mojzik picked up his first hit later in the inning with an RBI single.
The sixth inning wasn?t much better as 11 Boilermakers batters came to the plate. A two-out Bearcat error proved costly as six runs came across in the inning. Mojzik had the big hit of the inning banging a three-run bases clearing triple off the left field wall.
Purdue rounded out the night?s scoring on an RBI double by Dane Wolfe in the seventh inning.
The Bearcats will try to get back to winning ways when they travel to Saint Louis for a Conference USA series this weekend. The set against the Billikens (4-21, 1-8 C-USA) will get underway on Friday night at 7 p.m. CT.
