CINCINNATI, OHIO?The University of Cincinnati?s men?s soccer team opened its spring schedule on April 3 at Gettler Stadium, hosting the Bearcat Invitational. The three-team field included Northern Kentucky University and the Cincinnati Kings.
The Bearcats opened the tournament taking on the Cincinnati Kings. The very physical match ended in a 0-0 tie. Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), a 2004 2nd team All-C-USA selection, had the shutout in goal for the Bearcats.
The second match of the day was NKU taking on The Cincinnati Kings. NKU scored early in the first half and added two more goals in the second half to post a 3-0 win.
A defensive struggle, the final match of the day pitted UC vs. NKU. The Bearcats had opportunities, but were unable to get past the stingy Norse defense. The match ended in a 0-0 tie.
?It was good to finally get our spring season underway! I think we played well defensively and our goalkeepers did a great job,? said head coach Hylton Dayes. ?These were our first spring games and we need to improve our play in the final 3rd and hopefully create more goal scoring opportunities. I am very encouraged by the overall performance.?
The men will host the Ohio Cup on Saturday April 9, starting at noon. The Bearcats will face crosstown-rival Xavier, in the first match of the day. Dayton will square off against Wright State at approximately 1:30pm. The consolation match will take place at approximately 3pm, with the championship match starting at 4:30pm at Gettler Stadium.
