CINCINNATI, Ohio--The University of Cincinnati?s Women?s Soccer team continued their spring season on April 3, playing host to the Bearcat Classic at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats welcomed Miami (Ohio), Ball State, and the U-17 Cincinnati Classics Hammer club team.

UC opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Miami (Ohio). Ashley Roush (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto), who missed the past two seasons due to injury, scored the lone goal for the Bearcats. Playing right full back, Roush made an aggressive run up the field and scored off of an assist by Marie Strelka (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull.) Miami scored the next two goals of the very competitive match, including the game-winner on a penalty kick, to earn the victory in the 80-minute match. Goalkeeper Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Roger Bacon) recorded a shutout in the first half before being relieved by Jennifer Doerflein (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Seton) in the second half.

Cincinnati then took on Ball State in a 45-minute match. The UC offense was unable to produce many scoring opportunities. Fouls and impatience impaired the Bearcats to fall into a rhythm, however many solid performances were seen by individuals on the squad; namely by Kate Norton (Rector, PA./Greenburg Central Catholic). Ball State scored late off of a rebound save made by Slye to escape with a 1-0 win.

The Bearcats had the next match off as Ball State took on the Classics in a 45-minute match. Ball State scored first, but the Classics immediately came back to tie the game, 1-1. After several scoring chances for both teams, the match ended in a tie.

UC was back in action against the Classics in the final match of the afternoon. Ana Farmer (Renfrewshire, Scot. / Cardonald College) recorded the hat trick, scoring each of the Bearcat goals in the 3-1 win. Andrea Haney (Hilliard, Ohio/ Hilliard Davidson) and Amy May (Hudson, Ohio/ Walsh Jesuit) each contributed one assist. The Bearcats were up, 3-0, in the last minute when the Classics scored on a breakaway with just seconds remaining to produce the final margin.

?I am pleased with the good production and the positive mentality of the team,? said head coach Meridy Glenn. ?I asked the team to move the ball around and try new systems. Overall, although still room for improvements, the UC team succeeded. They showed great character in playing the final 45 minutes against a good club team.?

The women will take part in the Indiana Invitational on Sunday April 10 in Bloomington, Indiana. The Bearcats will take on Valparaiso at noon ET and Indiana University at approximately 2 p.m. ET.
