BEARCATS LOOK FOR STATE SUPREMACY: UC heads to Columbus for the All-Ohio Championships on April 15-16, hosted by Ohio State. Fourteen teams from the state of Ohio will compete at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. UC is the defending men?s champion, while the women finished seventh of 12 teams last season.

UC MEN WIN MIAMI INVITE: The University of Cincinnati men?s track team earned five event titles in winning the Miami Invitational on April 9 at George L. Rider Track. The Bearcat women placed fourth in the thirteen-team field.
The men posted 201.50 points, easily outdistancing second-place Kent State (162) and host Miami (149.50). The women?s team earned 87.50 points in placing behind champion Ball State (144.50), host Miami (113), and Kent State (112).
Senior Chris Smith won the pole vault by a foot and a half, qualifying for the NCAA regionals with a 17' 6-1/2" vault. He fell just 3-1/4" short of Mike Albrinck?s school record, set in 1994.
Other winners for the men included sophomore Justin Conway in the 200 meters (21.97), junior Taylor Garvin in the 3,000 steeple chase (9:17.83), and sophomore Cameron Widget in the long jump (23? 6?). The 4 x 400 relay team, consisting of senior Jimmy Mount, sophomore Keith Hamilton, junior Jerod Batt, and junior Lonnie Irving, won the title in 3:13.40.
On the women?s side, sophomore high jumper Renee Hein continued her terrific season, winning her third high jump title of the season (5? 8-3/4?). Senior Jo Young contributed her usual top-five finishes, winning the hammer throw with a school-record 175? 10? heave, and finishing third in the shot put (46? 10-1/4?) and fourth in the discus (137? 6?). Her hammer throw mark set a school record by two inches. She now owns the school records in the indoor and outdoor shot put and the hammer throw. Freshman Brittany Klima eclisped her own school record in the pole vault (11? 11-3/4?).
LAST YEAR?S ALL-OHIO: The University of Cincinnati men?s track and field team captured the 2004 All-Ohio Championships on April 17 in Columbus. Cincinnati recorded 215.5 points, a full 80 points ahead of second place Miami.
Ashley Wilhelm set a school record in the heptathlon, scoring 5,067 points to pass Laura Valldeperas? record by 22 points. Monique Brent finished second in the 400 meter dash in 56.27 seconds while Karen Berling was third in the 10,000 meter run in 37:41.57. The women finished seventh out of 12 teams.
Steve Kahle posted a regional qualifying mark in the shot put, tossing 54?2? and placing second. The 4x100 relay team, as well as the 4x400 team, each captured their events in 41.50 and 3:12.14, respectively. Kenny Wade won the 200 meter dash in 21.19. He also placed second in the 100 meter dash (10.51). Jake Richards won the 800 meter run in 1:53.83 while Chris Smith captured the pole vault after clearing 16? 8-3/4?.
David Payne lowered his NCAA Regional Qualification mark to 13.68 in the 110 hurdles. He also finished first in the 400 hurdles in a regional-qualifying mark of 51.91. James White placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6? 6-3/4? and won the long jump with a 25? 7-1/2? leap.
ANOTHER WEEK, ANOTHER QUALIFIER: After Jo Young qualified for the Mid-East Regionals in the shot put with a 47? 10-3/4? throw at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational on April 2, breaking her own school record, it was Chris Smith?s turn at Miami last weekend. Smith met the regional standard in the pole vault, clearing 17? 6-1/2? to win the Miami Inviational title. He is the fifth Bearcat to qualify for postseason action, joining Kenny Wade (200 meters), Jimmy Mount (decathlon), Renee Hein (high jump) and Young.
SMITH NABS C-USA HONORS: Senior Chris Smith was named the Conference USA Men?s Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending on April 10. Smith won the pole vault at the Miami Invitational, qualifying for regional competition with a 17? 6-1/2? vault. The mark is tops in C-USA this season and ranks in the top 10 nationally.
Smith joins classmate Jo Young as conference honorees this season. Young earned the award for the week ending on Mar. 20 for her three event titles (shot put, hammer throw, discus) at the Early Bird Relays.
KAHLE CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Steve Kahle, second on UC?s all-time shot put list, has posted two top-five C-USA marks on the season. Kahle?s shot put (52? 3-1/4?) ranks fifth and his hammer throw (165? 7?) ranks fourth.
KLIMA TIME: Freshman Brittany Klima has made an immediate impact on the women?s team. She owns the UC record in the outdoor pole vault (11? 11-3/4?) and has put her name in the UC top 10 in the indoor high jump (5? 5?, seventh) and indoor pole vault (11? 5-3/4?, second).
LIKE A BROKEN RECORD: The women?s indoor track and field team set several school records in 2005.
Sophomore Renee Hein improved on her own school mark throughout the season, winning the C-USA high jump title with a 5? 9-1/2? leap.
Junior Shintara Carpenter also broke her own record in the triple jump, posting a 40? 10-1/4?.
Sophomore Tara Meier was locked in a three-way tie with Junior Ashley Wilhelm and Freshman Brittany Klima for the top pole vault mark. She eclipsed her teammates at the C-USA Championships with an 11? 11-3/4? vault.
Wilhelm bettered her own school mark, scoring 3567 points in the pentathlon in winning the Akron Open.
Senior Jo Young dominated the indoor season, winning seven of the 12 events she entered. Young holds each of the top 10 indoor shot put marks in school history.
DEFENDING THE CROWN: The UC men?s team will be looking to defend its Conference USA title this season. Last year, the men won their third C-USA crown in nine years. The Bearcat men have finished no lower than third at the C-USA Championships and placed second on four occasions.
The women?s team has improved since the league started in 1996. UC finished last, scoring only one team point in 1996, but has finished sixth and fifth, respectively, the last two seasons.
COMING UP: UC will head back to Oxford for the Southern Ohio Cup on April 23. The annual three-team rivalry meet will provide southern Ohio bragging rights to either Ohio, Miami, or UC.
