On Monday (April 18), both Bearcat golf teams will kick off their final Conference USA Championships. The women are headed to the Germantown Country Club in Germantown, Tenn., while the men will travel to The Grand Bear in Gulfport, Miss.


SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati will compete for the 10th and final time in the Conference USA Women?s Golf Championship beginning Monday (April 18) as the Bearcats travel to the Germantown Country Club in Germantown, Tenn. for the 2005 edition of the event.

PREVIEWING THE TOURNAMENT: All eight of the Conference USA women?s golf programs will be on hand for the 2005 C-USA Golf Championship to be held April 18-20 at the Germantown Country Club in Germantown, Tenn. The 54-hole tournament will see 18 holes played on each of the three day?s of the tournament. The field for the event includes UC, Louisville, Memphis, Southern Miss, TCU, Tulane, UAB and USF. Tulane is the defending champion of the event that has seen five winners in its nine-year history. USF is a five-time team champion, while Memphis has scored a pair of team titles.

LAST YEAR?S C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP: Junior Allison Couch finished the 2004 Conference USA Tournament in 22nd place to lead the Bearcats. The finish by Couch was her best ever in the conference meet. After struggling on day one with a 92, Couch bounced back on the final two days of the event, carding an 82 in round two and finishing with a 75 in the final round to give her a score of 249, just two strokes off of a top-20 finish. Junior Alysa Few was the second-highest placing Bearcat, ending the event tied for 35th with 263, after a final round 89.

In the team standings, the Bearcats finished in ninth place with a total score of 1,070. Tulane ran away with the team championship, finishing 18 shots ahead of TCU with a score of 941. The Green Wave?s Liliana Alvarez earned medalist honors after rounds of 77, 77 and 72 to win by one stroke over East Carolina?s Adrienne Millican.

IN THE RANKINGS: The latest Golfweek rankings show the Bearcats as the 146th ranked team in the country. Individually, seven of UC?s nine players are in the rankings. The players ranked include: Hillery Wilson (503), Allison Mayborg (644), Allison Couch (757), Alysa Few (865), Sarah Bires (1067), Mya Pronschinske (1168), Sarah Ryan (1267).

PERFECT SHOTS: Allison Mayborg and Sarah Bires have each recorded holes-in-one this season, becoming one of only two sets of teammates in the country to record the feat.

PREVIEWING THE TOURNAMENT: All 14 Conference USA members will be represented at the 2005 C-USA Men?s Golf Championship which gets underway on Monday (April 18) at The Grand Bear in Gulfport, Miss. A total of 54 holes will be contested, with 18 holes being played on each of the tournament?s three days. Joining the Bearcats in the field will be squads from Charlotte, East Carolina, Houston, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, Saint Louis, Southern Miss, TCU, Tulane, UAB and USF. TCU has won the last three C-USA titles, snapping a five-year stranglehold Houston had on the top spot.

LAST YEAR?S C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP: Freshman Geoff Newman shot a team and tournament-best round of 74 to pace the Bearcats in the final round of play at the 2004 Conference USA Tournament. Newman finished the tournament tied for 51st with a score of 231. Sophomore Adam Fluty, who led UC in the first 36 holes of play, carded a final round 79 to end the event in 55th place. The Bearcats? lone senior, Chris Larbes wrapped up his collegiate career with a final round 78, to end the event in a tie for 63rd.

The team standings showed the Bearcats in 13th place out of 14 squads, with a three-day total of 936. TCU captured the team championship with a score of 859, 12 shots better than second place Charlotte. The Horned Frogs also had the individual winner as Adam Meyer collected medalist honors with rounds of 68, 68 and 69 to finish with a 206 and a nine-shot cushion over Charlotte?s Ray Sheedy.

IN THE RANKINGS: The latest Golfweek rankings show the Bearcats as the 240th ranked team in the country. Individually, five of UC?s 10 players are in the rankings. The players with their rankings include: Adam Fluty (1267), Geoff Newman (1379), John Clodfelder (1469), Joe Young (1477), Justin Wilson (1518).
