CINCINNATI, Ohio-The University of Cincinnati women?s soccer team dropped its fifth straight match with a 2-0 loss to Vanderbilt in the Blue Chip Showcase on April 16 at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats are now 1-6 for the spring.

The Bearcats struggled to put together attacks in the first half, as the Commodores outshot UC, 10-2. Vanderbilt scored first on a penalty kick; a result of aggressive play inside the 18 as both teams attacked the ball. Rachael Epps (Grapevine, Texas/ Graprevine) and Ashley Roush (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Scioto) put together solid halves defensively, while goalkeeper Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Roger Bacon) halted a Vanderbilt scoring chance early in the half, coming out of net to knock the ball away from the attacker.

In the second half of play, Jennifer Doerflein (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) took over in goal. Doerflein saved two shots in a row while on the ground, as well as shot fired on a breakaway. As the Commodores? striker raced in alone, Doerflein aggressively came out of her net, attacked the ball and made the save. Play picked up for the Bearcats nearing the end of the game as UC?s Marie Strelka (Trumbull, Conn./Tumbull) and Kristen Gerwin both got shots off. Neither found their mark and the Commodores added a late goal to produce the final margin.

?The difference between last week and this week is fantastic. The mentality, how we organized ourselves on the field, and how we moved the ball around were big improvements,? said head coach Meridy Glenn. ?Our mentality was strong and our goal is to make that consistent. They are beginning to show their strength and they are coming together.?

In the day?s second match, UC?s rival Louisville took on Mississippi. A very physical match, Ole Miss scored first when a shot was fired from 35 yards out and bounced over the goalie?s head and into the net. The Rebels scored their second goal off of a header to make the final score 2-0.

The Bearcats are back in action when they host the Cincinnati Invitational on April 29 at Gettler Stadium. Teams slated to participate in the final spring tournament of the season are Ohio University and the Greater Toledo Futbol Club. UC will take on GTFC first at 6 p.m. followed by UC vs. Ohio at 7:30 p.m. The final match will begin at 10 p.m. when Ohio takes on GTFC.
