FT. WORTH, Texas --- The Bearcat tennis team played twice on Friday at the Conference USA tournament in Ft. Worth, Texas. They were victorious in the first match by upsetting 11th seeded Marquette 4-2, but couldn?t pull another upset against Charlotte. Cincinnati lost to the 49ers 4-0.
There were plenty of bright spots in Cincinnati?s win against Marquette. The Bearcats redeemed themselves from their 4-3 loss to the Golden Eagles earlier this month. The victory also marked their first win of the year against a conference opponent.
Samantha Liu and Hannah Hinton recorded an easy 8-1 win against Marquette?s Dominika Dabrowski and Maria Calberto. Liu finishes her career at UC tied for eighth place in career doubles wins with 54. Junior Jill Klauck?s success at the third singles spot solidified her position as the team leader in singles wins with 16 on the season. She defeated Marquette?s Erin Watkins 6-1, 6-0 in the morning match.
The Bearcats weren?t as fortunate in their evening match-up against 7th seeded Charlotte. The 49ers swept Cincinnati, 4-0. UC?s Lindsay Brown tried to force a third set against Charlotte?s Jennifer Hatch after losing the first set, but the freshman couldn?t complete the comeback, eventually falling 6-0, 7-5.
The 49ers dominated doubles play by winning at both the second and third positions. The Charlotte team of Kathy Robey and Ofra Friedman won 8-2 over Jill and Julie Klauck. The Bearcats? squad of Cristina Reyes and Madison Reasoner faced similar results by losing to Ali Piacente and Jennifer Hatch 8-3.
Cincinnati finished in a tie with Memphis for 11th place in their final Conference USA tournament. The Bearcats will try to continue with their success next year in the BIG EAST.
