SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati rowing team competes in its final home regatta of the season on Saturday, April 23 at Harsha Lake in East Fork State Park. The Bearcats will faceoff against the Kansas Jayhawks and Buffalo Bulls.
PREVIEWING THE REGATTA: Both Kansas and Buffalo competed in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey on Sunday, April 17. The Jayhawks earned a victory in the varsity four while Buffalo took home a win in the novice four.
FAMILIAR FACES: UC rowing has battled Kansas in each of the last two seasons. The Jayhawks hosted Cincinnati and Kansas State last April at the 2004 Kansas Cup. UC came away with victories in the varsity four and the second varsity eight. In 2003, the Bearcats hosted Kansas at Harsha Lake, taking the varsity eight title in dual competition.
LAST TIME OUT: Notre Dame, the Bearcats? future BIG EAST opponent, took all eight titles in South Bend on April 17. The Cincinnati varsity four?s time of 7:49.99 wasn?t enough as the Fighting Irish bettered the Bearcat squad by posting a time of 7:40.40. In the varsity eight race, Notre Dame was again triumphant by finishing in 6:34.10. The Bearcats recorded a time of 6:44.20.
UP NEXT: The UC rowing team will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia. They will face the Mountaineers of West Virginia University in a head-to-head match-up on April 30 in another preview of BIG EAST competition.
GETTING TO THE RACE: Directions to East Fork from Cincinnati, Ohio:
From Downtown: take I-471 South into Kentucky to I-275 East. I-275 East to Exit #65, Beechmont Avenue East 10 miles to route 222 (at second traffic light it is the second 222 sign) Do not turn at the Fireworks store. Turn left at light and left again into the park, and follow signs to the beach. The races finish in the middle of the beach.
Coming from other directions: Same exit and directions from I-275, just get on I-275 from whatever direction you are coming from.
Alternate Route from Campus: Take I-471 South to I-275 East or North Take exit 72 (second exit across river) follow Rt. 52 to 10 mile road (will say Rt 749) Turn Left on 749. Follow the road until you get to a traffic light with a gas station on the right (Rt 132?) Go through the light and bear to the left at the fork in the road. Follow this road until it dead ends into Rt. 222, turn left and cross Rt. 125 and the park entrance is on the left, follow the signs to the Beach.
