BIRMINGHAM, Ala.---Three Cincinnati pitchers held UAB to just four hits as the Bearcats escaped with a 1-0 win over the Blazers on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
Sean Munninghoff (3-3) tossed 5.1 shutout innings in his first start since March 26 to get the win for UC. Josh Kay got the last six outs for his fifth save of the year.
Brian Szarmach provided all the offense the Bearcats would need when he lifted his team-best eighth home run of the year to right center in the fourth inning.
UC improves to 16-19 with the victory and is now 6-11 in the Conference USA race. UAB falls to 25-15, 10-8 C-USA.
Munninghoff ran into early trouble in the second inning, loading the bases with just one out. But Munninghoff got Ben McCullers to hit into a 3-2-3 double play to end the threat. After getting out of that jam, Munninghoff retired 10 straight batters before walking two and leaving in the sixth inning in favor of Matt Heber.
UAB mounted one last ditch effort in the ninth, getting a lead-off double over the outstretched glove of Logan Parker by Nathan McCorkle. J.R. Bond bunted McCorkle to third, prior to Cole Helms getting hit by a Kay pitch. Kay bounced back to strike out Seth Rollin, but walked Zac Ward to load the bases. Rush Knight then went down looking at strike three as Kay preserved the Bearcat triumph.
The Bearcats will be back at home on Wednesday when they host local rival Miami (Ohio) for the first time this season. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
