Trent Cole was the first Bearcat taken in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Trent Cole, Tyjuan Hagler and Daven Holly have added to the recent tradition of University of Cincinnati defensive players to be selected in the NFL Draft.

Cole, who led the Bearcats in tackles for loss the past two seasons from his defensive end position, was taken in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was the 146th player taken in the 2005 draft.

Hagler, who flanked Cole at outside linebacker the past two falls, was taken with the 37th pick in the fifth round, the 173rd pick overall, by the Indianapolis Colts.

Holly, a two-time second team All-Conference USA selection at cornerback, was the first pick of the seventh round and the No. 215 pick overall by San Francisco.

With the drafting of the trio, UC has now had 13 defensive players, and 18 Bearcats overall, selected over the past 11 NFL drafts. Two years ago, Antwan Peek, another UC defensive end, was a third-round pick by the Houston Texans and Blue Adams was taken in the seventh round by Detroit. In 1998, cornerback Artrell Hawkins was a second round pick by Cincinnati and linebacker Brad Jackson was taken in the third round by Miami.

Cole, a 6-4, 260-pound senior, finished second in career tackles for loss (48) and third in career sacks (18.5). He recorded 22 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks along with 68 tackles in 2004, earning UC?s John Pease Award as the most outstanding defensive linemen. Cole was a two-time first team All-Conference USA selection and a third team All-American by Football News.

Hagler, a 6-2, 230 senior, led UC in tackling with 82 total stops and 49 solos. He also recorded eight tackles for loss. A third team All-C-USA choice, Hagler earned UC?s Brig Owens Award as the most outstanding defensive back. He capped his career with 246 tackles and 34.5 tackles for loss.

Holly, a 5-11, 184 senior, was a two-year starter in the Bearcat secondary. He tied a UC single season record for interceptions with six in 2003 and closed his career with the fourth-most career interceptions (9). He had 45 tackles and two interceptions as a senior.
