CINCINNATI, Ohio---Cincinnati was limited to a season-low four hits as local rival Miami ran to a 7-2 win over the Bearcats on Wednesday night in the UC Baseball Stadium.
The RedHawks (26-12) took advantage of seven stolen bases and two timely UC errors to pick up the victory. UC is now 18-20 with the defeat.
Nick Buscemi, making his first start in nearly a month, was solid on the mound for the Bearcats, allowing just one earned run (five total) in 4.2 innings of work. He falls to 1-2 with the defeat. Miami starter Matt Erwood was the winner, improving to 4-1 after 5.1 innings allowing just two runs on three hits.
Jim Olds provided most of the Bearcats? offensive spark, going 2-for-3. Miami got three hits from Brandon Hillier, along with two from Brian Canada and three RBI from John Slone.
Miami took advantage of a two-out double by Canada in the first inning to jump to the early 1-0 lead. With Hillier on third, Canada drove a fly ball down the right field line that Erik Eitel couldn?t come up with for a two-bagger.
After the first inning marker, Buscemi settled into a groove that saw him retire nine of the next 10 batters he faced. His undoing came in the fifth, as the RedHawks pushed across four unearned runs. With two outs and a runner on, Mark Haske misplayed a grounder that allowed one runner to score. Following a single by Hillier, Slone drove a deep home run to left to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
UC finally broke through for a couple in the last of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Haske bounced into a fielder?s choice, but when Eric Radley?s throw to first was wild, both Eitel and LaFringe Hayes were able to race home for UC?s first and only markers of the day.
The RedHawks tacked on their final two runs in the ninth when an errant throw by Haske allowed Hillier and Slone to trot home.
The Bearcats will return to Conference USA action this weekend, when they hit the road to East Carolina. The series gets underway Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
