Nearly 80 youth soccer players attended UC's free clinic on April 30

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati men's and women's soccer teams held a free soccer clinic for nearly 80 area youth on Saturday, April 30 as part of UC Soccer's Alumni Weekend. The Bearcats, partnered with the Clifton Soccer Association for Youth, used the clinic as an opportunity to promote the game of soccer to the local community.

The two-hour clinic, led by head men's coach Hylton Dayes and head women's coach Meridy Glenn, focused on teaching the basic skills involved in the game. Members of both men's and women's soccer teams worked with groups of youngsters, practicing dribbling, passing and goalkeeping techniques. Following the lessons, players signed autographs and gave away prizes to the children in attendance.

"Today was really a fun day for soccer in Clifton," Dayes said. "It's great for the student-athletes to be able to work with the kids. It's really important for us to connect with the local community and youth soccer is a means of doing so."

"We were just overwhelmed by the generosity of the staff and the players," Clifton S.A.Y. Director Ernie Henderson added. "Coach Glenn and coach Dayes were very responsive and welcoming and we were very appreciative that they took time to do this for us."

"I was really proud of [UC's S.A.Y. representative] Marie Strekla for getting both men's and women's teams together with S.A.Y.," commented Glenn. "Anytime you can work with kids and gain fans, it's a good opportunity."

Following the clinic the women's team held its annual alumni match, won by the alums, 2-1. The men's alumni match followed, with the current team grabbing a 3-2 victory.
