CINCINNATI, Ohio---Kent State held Cincinnati to just four hits as the Golden Flashes picked up a 3-1 non-conference win over the Bearcats on Tuesday night in the UC Baseball Stadium.
The Golden Flashes (27-14) got all the runs they would need with single markers in each of the first and third innings. Eric Holick?s solo homer in the seventh inning gave KSU the final winning margin.
The Bearcats, who got a pair of hits from Mark Haske, fall to 19-23 with the defeat. David Theobald took the loss for Cincinnati, allowing two runs on five hits in 2.2 innings to slip to 3-2 on the year. Steve Ross (3-0) was the winner for Kent State, as he hurled five shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Chad Wagler worked the final 3.1 innings for his third save of the year.
Kent State was able to generate a first inning run following a lead-off bunt single by Emmanuel Burris. Burris moved to second when Theobald was called for a balk, then went to third on a ground ball. The Golden Flash lead-off man then dashed home when Theobald uncorked a wild pitch.
The third inning started with Michael Obyc banging a double off the left field wall and moving to third on Burris? sacrifice bunt. Andrew Davis then drove an RBI single past a drawn in Bearcat infield to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
UC was finally able to break through for its run in the sixth. With LaFringe Hayes on first, Mark Muscenti bounced a ground ball to shortstop, but Burris? throw to second was wild, allowing Hayes to move to third. One out later, Logan Parker plated Hayes with a single through the right side.
But leading off the seventh, Holick belted his second homer of the season off the scoreboard in right to make it a 3-1 contest.
?I thought Kent State pitched well tonight, but we are in a tough way offensively right now,? stated Bearcat head coach Brian Cleary. ?We just haven?t been able to score like we need too lately. Our bats have really cooled off as of late and we have struggled to score runs.?
The game also featured an interesting side note as former Kent State player Pat LeMasters and ex-Bearcat Drew Saylor met their former schools for the first time. LeMasters went 0-for-1 in his only at-bat, while Saylor drew three walks in his four plate appearances.
UC will try to get back on track when it hosts TCU this weekend. The series starts on Friday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
