SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati rowing team travels to Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. this weekend for the Aramark Sprints NCAA Regional regatta. The competition will begin on Saturday, May 14 at 9 a.m. Finals will take place at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 15.

PREVIEWING THE REGATTA: The Bearcats will face some tough competition this year as eight of the top 20 teams in the nation will contend for the regional title. Third-ranked Michigan State and fourth-ranked Ohio State lead the powerful field, followed by Michigan (7), Wisconsin (14) and Minnesota (15) in the Central Region, and Virginia (9), Tennessee (11) and Louisville (20) in the South. Three-time winner and last year's champion Virginia will again be a dominant force on the lake.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT: Cincinnati returns to Tennessee looking to continue its improvement in regional competition. After finishing toward the bottom of the field in 2003, the Bearcats finished second in the B-final of the open four contest last May, giving them an eighth place finish overall. The varsity eight finished third in their B-final race and in ninth place overall.

LAST TIME OUT: Cincinnati had a very successful outing after being rained out in their final home regatta. The Bearcats swept all three races in the head-to-head match up against the University of West Virginia on April 30. In the novice eight, UC recorded a 7:37, beating the Mountaineers (8:30) by almost a full minute. Cincinnati also took the win in the varsity eight, posting a time of 7:19. West Virginia finished in 7:26. The Bearcats earned a commanding victory with a time of 7:42 in the varsity four.

SOGGY SITUATIONS: Cincinnati?s regatta against Kansas and Buffalo was cancelled due to inclement weather on April 23. The cancellation caused both of the Bearcats? home competitions to be rained out this spring. The April 2 contest against Indiana, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, and Louisville was also called off due to rain.
