HOUSTON, Texas -- The University of Cincinnati men's track and field team finished third at the 2005 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships which concluded today at Houston's Lewis/Tellez Track and Field Complex. The Bearcats posted 90 points in the 21 events while the women placed seventh with 57 points. Houston took home both men's (201 points) and women's (127 points) titles.
UC's Steve Kahle (Spencerville, Ohio/Spencerville) earned the Bearcat men's second C-USA individual championship with a personal-best and regional-qualifying 56' 3-3/4" shot put.
Four men's high jumpers scored for the Bearcats, including Justin Bending (Heath, Ohio/Heath) and Tyler Grieves (Botkins, Ohio/Botkins), who finished in a third-place tie after clearing 6' 6-3/4". Andrew Smith (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) finished seventh (6' 4-3/4") and Patrick Dunn (DeSoto, Texas/Bishop Dunne) finished eighth (6' 4-3/4") to account for 14 points in the event.
Also scoring for the men were Alex Ramsey (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Patrick Starkey (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) in the 800 meters, finishing fourth (1:50.56) and fifth (1:50.60), respectively. Both came up just shy of the regional qualifying mark of 1:50.40. Clarence Hartman (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) finished sixth in the 400 meter hurdles in 53.93 while pole vaulter Chris Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) finished second, clearing 16' 6-3/4". Fellow vaulters Dan Albrinck (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) and Chad Beamer (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, each clearing 15' 7". Rounding out the men's scorers was Mike Mockbee (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), who placed fifth in the discus with a season-best 159' 9" throw.
The women were led by Jo Young (London, Ohio/London), who smashed her own school mark in the shot put with a 51' 1/4" toss, finishing in second place. She also won the hammer throw on Thursday, the first day of competition and finished fifth in the discus (149' 0") on Friday, accounting for 22 of the team's 57 points.
Renee Hein (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy), the Bearcats' record holder in the high jump, finished second in the event after winning the C-USA Indoor title. Her clearance of 5' 8-3/4" tied for the best mark, but Southern Miss' Krista Miller missed only once in her attempt to clear that height, while Hein missed five times before clearing on her final attempt.
UC's regional qualifiers will head to Bloomington, Ind. for the NCAA Mid-East Regional Championships on May 27-28.
