BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- University of Cincinnati senior Jo Young (London, Ohio/London) qualified for the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the Mid-East Regional Championships at Indiana University's Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex. Young finished fifth in the shot put, bettering her own school record with a 51' 6-1/2" heave.
Young was the highlight of an otherwise disappointing regional meet for the Bearcats as only one other UC athlete finished in the top 10 in his or her event. Rainy weather plagued the meet, as the first day of competition was suspended with four events remaining.
Renee Hein (Cinicnnati, Ohio/Mercy) just missed moving on, finishing in a four-way tie for fifth place in the high jump, clearing 5' 9-1/4". Notre Dame's Stacey Cowan earned a trip to the national meet by winning a jump-off.
Young and Hein combined to score 6.5 team points, good enough for a 27th-place finish among the 37 teams scoring in the meet.
The men's contingent struggled and was unable to advance an athlete to the NCAA Championships. Chris Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton), the nation's 14th-ranked pole vaulter, was unable to clear the initial height of 16' 1-1/4". Chandler Groves (Payne, Ohio/Wayne Trace) finished 27th in the long jump with a 21' 10-3/4" leap, well below his season-best jump of 25' 2-3/4". The men's top finisher, Steve Kahle (Spencerville, Ohio/Spencerville), placed 23rd in the shot put with a 53' 3-3/4" toss, three feet short of his season-best.
Young, along with decathletes Ben Haber (Mansfield, Ohio/Ontario) and Jimmy Mount (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) and heptathlete Ashley Wilhelm (St. Leon, Ind./East Central), will head to Sacramento, Calif. on June 8-11 for the NCAA Championships.
