CINCINNATI, Ohio---Jon Niese, who in November inked a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Cincinnati, was drafted by the New York Mets during day one of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft which began Tuesday.
Niese, a recent graduate of Defiance (Ohio) Senior High, was selected by the Mets in the seventh round. The left-handed pitcher was taken with the 209th overall pick.
Twice during his career, Niese has been tabbed as the Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year. A member of the USA Baseball Junior National Team, Niese was ranked as the 13th best left-handed pitcher in the nation by Teamonebaseball.com.
The second day of the MLB draft is scheduled to get underway at noon ET on Wednesday. With 18 rounds in the books at the end of Tuesday, rounds 19-50 will take place on day two.
