SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Decathletes Ben Haber and Jimmy Mount finished 17th and 18th, respectively, in the 26-man field at the 2005 NCAA Championships Thursday at Sacramento State University. UC's Renee Hein (high jump) and Jo Young (shot put) each failed to qualify for the finals in their respective events, bringing UC's 2005 track and field season to a close.
Neither Haber nor Mount was at the top of his game in the two-day event. Haber posted 6777 points, well below the season-best 7204 he put together to win the Conference USA championship. Mount also finished below his season-high with a 6534. His best was a 7219 at the All-Ohio Championships. The duo's national finishes were better than their national ranking coming into the meet. Mount was 22nd, while Haber ranked 23rd.
Hein, the C-USA indoor champion in the high jump, cleared 5' 8-1/2", but was unsuccessful on her three attempts at 5' 9-3/4". She finished in a four-way tie for 24th place.
Young came into the NCAA meet ranked 35th in the shot put. She finished 21st, with a 49' 3-1/2" heave. Young ends her career as the Bearcats' indoor and outdoor record-holder in the shot while also holding the top mark in the hammer throw.
