Bearcats Knock Off No. 18 Ohio State

Aug. 26, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Junior Omar Cummings (Old Harbour, Jamaica/Cincinnati State) scored his third goal in two preseason games and the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team knocked off No. 18 Ohio State, 1-0, tonight in an exhibition contest in front of 990 rowdy spectators at Crew Stadium.

Cincinnati outplayed the favored Buckeyes, outshooting OSU, 13-7, and has not allowed a goal in two games this season.

Cummings, a transfer from Cincinnati State, put back a rebound off of a Mikhail Awai (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Queen's Royal College) shot, giving UC a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish.

UC's keepers, junior Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and sophomore John-Michael Boggs (Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence Dunbar), have played flawlessly thus far in the exhibition season. The two netminders have combined for 180 scoreless minutes and have made eight saves.

The Bearcat offense has been solid as well, outshooting opponents, 33-14.

UC will open its regular season on Friday, Sept. 2 at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats host Wright State in a 7 p.m. contest.
