CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team topped Michigan State, 1-0, today at Gettler Stadium. The win marks the Bearcats' first win against a team from the Big Ten since a 1-0 victory at Ohio State in 2002. UC improves to 1-1-0 while MSU drops to 0-1-1.
The Bearcats opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Freshman Lindsey Noteboom (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) hooked a corner kick into the box and after a header from Becky Imhoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was blocked, Kim Sykes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) fired a shot that glanced off the hands of Michigan State keeper Nicole Galas and trickled into the net to give UC a 1-0 lead.
UC limited the Spartan scoring chances in the second stanza by keeping the ball in the Michigan State half and winning the midfield battle. The Bearcat defense was sensational, thwarting several MSU chances with its physical play. Jen Leiter (Cincinnati, Ohio/Univ. of Florida) led the defensive charge, with help from Gigi Ernst (Plain City, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and Kate Norton (Rector, Pa./Greenburg Central Catholic).
Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) earned the shutout in goal for the Bearcats in improving her record to 1-1-0. She made three saves.
UC outshot its opponent for the second straight contest, firing 12 shots to MSU's 10.
"I think it is very important to take advantage of your home games," head coach Meridy Glenn stated. "We matched up physically and we had a great mentality going in."
The Bearcats will head to Dayton for the Dayton Invitational over the holiday weekend. On Friday, Sept. 2, UC will take on its second straight Big Ten opponent, Ohio State, at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 4, the Bearcats will play host Dayton at Bajuan Field. Kickoff against UD will be at 1:30 p.m.
