AND THEY'RE OFF: The University of Cincinnati cross country teams will start their 2005 season on Saturday at the Flyer 5K Challenge at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering, Ohio. The meet is scheduled for a 10:45 start. The Bearcats will face host University of Dayton, as well as Wright State University, Miami (Ohio), Xavier University, Northern Kentucky University, and IUPUI.
THE FLYER 5K FIELD: The Flyer 5K will be the season-opener for all seven schools. Cincinnati, Dayton, Wright State, Miami, Xavier, and IUPUI each competed at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet in Ypsilanti, Mich. to conclude their 2004 seasons. Of those teams, Miami led the way, followed by Cincinnati and Xavier, in both the men and women's races. Miami's men's team finished ninth, while UC placed 14th and Xavier 18th. For the women, the RedHawks finished 12th as a team. Cincinnati was 16th and the Musketeers placed 23rd overall.
WHO TO WATCH FOR IN 2005: The Bearcats will rely on a mix of veterans and newcomers in their first season in the BIG EAST Conference. On the men's side, juniors Kevin Schwarz, Brad Neumann, and Taylor Garvin will be looked uponfor leadership on the course. Transfer John Dixon and freshmen Rick and Randy King will be expected to make immediate impacts.
Senior Karen Berling is expected to be a major force for the Bearcats. She will be supported by fellow veterans junior Cristy Doll and sophomore Jennifer Hannen, as well as freshmen Ellen Knopf, Kris Schuerle, and Justine Yauch.
2004 FLYER 5K: Cincinnati saw some success at last year's Challenge. The men's team finished second overall behind Miami. Schwarz led the Bearcat men placing fifth overall with a time of 15:45. Kyle Dragan also scored with a 14th place finish.
The women also finished second as a team, again behind the RedHawks of Miami. Former Bearcat Ruth Limo won the meet in 18:43. Berling, who finished fourth in 2004, will try to lead the Cincinnati squad to another winning outing.
UP NEXT: The Bearcats will face local rivals again on Sept. 10 for the Miami Fall Classic in Oxford, Ohio. The meet begins at 11:00 a.m.
