Vintage Baseball Game
One of the highlights during the City of Florence's upcoming 175th Anniversary Celebration will be a vintage-style baseball game. The throwback game will take place on Monday, September 5 at 12:30 p.m. when the Florence Maulers host the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings at Champion Window Field, home of the Florence Freedom. The event is free to attend and is sponsored by Fischer Homes.
The 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings Vintage Baseball Club is an organization dedicated to recreating the first professional baseball team. Their uniforms are exact replicas of the uniforms the 1869 team wore. They also use replica baseballs, bats, and bases and use the vocabulary and jargon from the nineteenth century.
Scheduled to play for the Cincinnati Red Stockings are: Rick `Preacher' Anderson, Andrew Pardi, Tim `Sparky' Gilkey, Mark Stewart, Joe `River City' Gilkey, Charlie `Doc' Goodwin, Bob `Three Ring' Binder, Noah `Ark Boy' Goodwin, `Hamilton' Dan Fischer, Mark `Ice Wagon' Hurr, Bill `Pic' Dieckmann, Steve `One Sock' Griffith, and Dave `Big Dog' Brooks.
The Maulers will field a team created for this game only and will transport back to the nineteenth century and play by the rules of 1869. Scheduled to play for the Florence Maulers are: Marty Connor, Recommending Scout of the Cincinnati Reds; Terry Connor, Thomas More College Athletic Director/Basketball Coach; Everett Roper, Thomas More College Softball Coach; Dave Bezold, Northern Kentucky University Basketball Coach; Todd Asalon, Northern Kentucky University Baseball Coach; Brian Cleary, University of Cincinnati Baseball Coach; Bob Mullins, Kentucky Kings Baseball Scout/Coach; Brad Horn, former Boone County High School baseball player; Rick Sullivan, Boone County High School Assistant Coach; Walt Terrell, former Major League Baseball pitcher; and Bob Maddox, Gallatin County High School Baseball Coach.
