BEARCATS BACK FOR MORE MIAMI: The University of Cincinnati cross country teams will travel to Miami (Ohio) University on Saturday, Sept. 10 with hopes of continuing their early-season success. The teams have already met once this year at the Dayton Flyer 5K. The meet in Oxford begins at 11:00 a.m.
THE MIAMI INVITE FIELD: Last year's Miami Invitational was a three-way competition between the RedHawks, Cumberland College, and Marshall. Miami won the meet convincingly, finishing in first through eighth place in the women's race and taking the first three positions in the men's competition.
With Cumberland College returning this year, the Bearcats will also face Eastern Kentucky University, Wright State University, Cedarville, and Kent State University. The Kent State women's team was picked as the pre-season favorite in the Mid-American Conference.
BERLING'S BRILLIANCE: UC senior Karen Berling will try to repeat last week's performance against Miami's top runners at the Flyer 5K. Berling won the race in 18:58 ahead of Miami sophomore Sarah Henize (19:04) who finished second. The Cincinnati women's team will also attempt to continue their dominance over the RedHawks in Oxford this weekend. The Bearcats took first place (39 points) at last Saturday's Flyer 5K Challenge in Dayton, while Miami finished third (64 points).
SCHWARZ STARTS STRONG: Junior Kevin Schwarz's injuries seem to be a thing of the past. He ran through pain and suffered a disappointing finish at last year's conference championships, but is turning his fortunes around, starting with the 2005 Flyer 5K. Schwarz led runner-up UC by finishing third (15:39) in the season-opener. Schwarz and the Bearcats will get another shot at a strong Miami team, which topped Cincinnati in Dayton last weekend.
NOTEWORTHY NEWCOMERS: The newest Bearcats wasted no time making an impact this year. In her first meet in a Cincinnati uniform, freshman Ellen Knopf finished second on the team and sixth overall. Sophomore transfer John Dixon was the second runner across the finish line for the men's team, placing fourth at the Flyer 5K. Freshman Rick King made his Bearcat debut by finishing 13th, making him UC's fifth scorer.
UP NEXT: Cincinnati will race next in its only home competition of the season, the Queen City Invitational. Both Bearcat teams will try to defend their titles at Mount Airy Forest on Friday, Sept. 16.
