INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Butler this afternoon at BU's Varsity Field. A superior defensive effort by both clubs led to the Bearcats' second loss of the year.
Butler (4-0-0) scored the only goal of the match just seven minutes in as John DeVae headed in a bouncing Roberto Gallo header to give the Bulldogs the lead. Butler starts the season 4-0-0 for the first time since 1995.
Butler keeper Frank Peabody make two saves in recording his third shutouts in four starts this season. Bearcat netminder Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) made two stops.
Defense was the name of the game, as the teams combined for only nine total shots. Butler managed to get three shots on goal, while UC got two on net.
Butler now leads the all-time series , 6-4-1.
UC will return home for its first BIG EAST match at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats will entertain Connecticut, currently ranked as high as No. 3 (Soccer America) in the nation, on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. UC will then play host to Providence on Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
