BEARCATS RACE AT HOME: The University of Cincinnati cross country teams will compete in their only home meet of the year, the Queen City Invitational, on Friday, Sept. 16. The Bearcats are looking to repeat as defending champions on the Mt. Airy Forest course. The meet is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
THE QUEEN CITY FIELD: This year's quad-meet will include Kentucky State University, Marshall University, and Morehead State University as the Bearcats' opponents. Both Morehead State's men and women's teams took second place in 2004.
The Bearcats took both team titles at last year's invitational. Then-sophomore Kevin Schwarz earned the win for the men in 26:12. He was followed by seven of his teammates as the first eight places were filled by Bearcats. On the women's side, Cincinnati's Ruth Limo led the way in 18:58 with Karen Berling and Cristy Doll close behind.
DOUBLE THE FUN: UC's women's team took home their second title in as many weeks by winning the Miami Invitational on Sept. 10. They opened the season with a victory at the Dayton Flyer 5K on Sept. 3. The double-win has put the squad among some of the top Ohio teams, making them a major target for local rivals. The season's start is also one of the best in Cincinnati women's history.
NECK AND NECK: Sophomore John Dixon and junior Taylor Garvin are taking the strategy of running as a pack to the extreme. At the season opener in Dayton, the duo finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with just two seconds separating them. They finished back to back again at the Miami Invitational, taking third and fourth place. Dixon won the battle with his teammate with a time of 25:47.3, while Garvin finished the 8K course in 25:47.9.
MAKE WAY: Freshman Ellen Knopf is solidifying a spot for herself as a top Bearcat early in the season. With just two collegiate races under her belt, the newcomer has finished second on the team behind only her veteran teammate, Berling. After placing sixth in a time of 19:16 in Dayton, Knopf improved her time at Miami by completing the 5K course in 19:05. She also earned her second top-ten finish by placing seventh.
UP NEXT: The Bearcats will hit the road again as they travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational. The meet begins at 5:15 p.m. ET.
