SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati men's golf team opens its 2005-06 schedule this weekend, competing in the Rutgers Men's Golf Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament gets underway on Friday (Sept. 16) at the Rutgers University Golf Course in Somerset, N.J.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 2005 Rutgers Men's Golf Invitational will be played at the Rutgers University Golf Course in Somerset, N.J. A total of 54 holes will be played over two days, with action beginning on Friday (Sept. 16) at 8 a.m. with the first 36 holes of play. The tournament wraps up on Saturday, with 18 holes starting at 7:30 a.m. A total of 13 schools make up the tournament field, including BIG EAST members Cincinnati, Connecticut, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John's and Villanova. Rounding out the field are squads from Binghamton, Columbia, Delaware, Hartford, Longwood, Monmouth and Temple.
PLAYING FOR SONNY: The men's team will enjoy the leadership of assistant coach Sonny Rinala this season as he begins his first full year at UC. A former Bearcat golfer in the 1990's, Rinala played on mini-tours across the country following his time at Cincinnati. He has also been a golf pro and instructor across the country for nearly 10 years. Rinala will focus his efforts on the UC men's program this year, while Janet Carl, the head coach for both squads, will work closely with the women's team.
WELCOME ABOARD: The Bearcats welcome three new members to their roster this year and one brings an international flavor to the UC roster. Alberto Fernandez, a native of Gijon, Spain, is one of two freshmen on this year's team, being joined by Elida, Ohio native Paul Marshall. The Bearcats also added Alex Wenzel, a product of Toledo, Ohio, who transferred to UC from American University in Washington, D.C.
EXPERIENCED VETS: UC is well stocked in terms of experience heading into the 2005-06 season as all three of the Bearcats' top golfer from last year are back. Senior Adam Fluty, who shot a team-low 69 last year, paced the squad with a 75.3 average in 2005-06. Junior Geoff Newman wasn't far behind, as he shot a low of 71 and placed second with a 75.9 average. UC will also benefit from the return of senior John Clodfelder, who ranked third with a 2004-05 average of 77.8.
HOME COURSE ADVANTAGE: The Bearcats will host a tournament this fall with the playing of the Cincinnati Invitational on Oct. 31-Nov. 1. Elks Run Golf Course in Batavia will serve as the tournament host.
