SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati men's golf team takes to the links for the second time this fall when they compete in the John Dallio Memorial, hosted by DePaul, on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 26-27. The Bearcats are coming off an eighth place finish at last week's Rutgers Invitational that saw junior Joe Young claim team titlist honors, tying for 18th.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: A total of 13 teams will join host DePaul and the Bearcats for the 2005 John Dallio Memorial to be played at the Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago, Ill. The balance of the tournament field includes squads from Cleveland St., Dayton, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Illinois, Evansville, Lewis, Oakland, Saint Louis, Southern Illinois, Western Illinois, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wright St. and Youngstown St. A total of 54 holes will be played over the two days, with the tournament kicking off with 36 holes on Monday (Sept. 26) at 8:30 a.m. CT. Southern Illinois will be out to defend its team title, after winning last year by three strokes over Saint Louis.
LAST TIME OUT: Adam Fluty shot a 70 and Joe Young a 71 to help the Bearcats to an eighth place finish at the Rutgers Invitational. Young climbed to 18th in the final standings after completing the tournament with a score of 218. Fluty rebounded from two rounds of 75, by shooting a team-low round of 70 to wind up tied for 25th in the overall standings. The team rankings saw the Bearcats slide up to eighth place in the completed rundown, after sitting ninth through 36 holes. UC finished the tournament with a team score of 882, trailing BIG EAST rival Connecticut by four strokes. Columbia won the team title with an even-par score of 852.
PLAYING FOR SONNY: The men's team will enjoy the leadership of assistant coach Sonny Rinala this season as he begins his first full year at UC. A former Bearcat golfer in the 1990's, Rinala played on mini-tours across the country following his time at Cincinnati. He has also been a golf pro and instructor across the country for nearly 10 years. Rinala will focus his efforts on the UC men's program this year, while Janet Carl, the head coach for both squads, will work closely with the women's team.
EXPERIENCED VETS: UC is well stocked in terms of experience heading into the 2005-06 season as all three of the Bearcats' top golfers from last year are back. Senior Adam Fluty, who shot a team-low 69 last year, paced the squad with a 75.3 average in 2004-05. Junior Geoff Newman wasn't far behind, as he shot a low of 71 and placed second with a 75.9 average. UC will also benefit from the return of senior John Clodfelder, who ranked third with a 2004-05 average of 77.8.
