EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Cincinnati tennis team opened its fall season on Friday at day one of the Spartan Cup hosted by Michigan State.
Freshman Andrea Phillips and senior Jill Klauck each dropped their opening match in Flight A, but recovered to reach the semifinals of the consolation bracket. Phillips defeated Mallory Stemle of IUPUI, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, and Klauck topped Allison Thompson, also of IUPUI, 6-1, 6-0.
In Flight B, freshman Carling Arundel opened her Bearcat career with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Vanessa Carna of IUPUI, as did fellow frosh Elizabeth Young with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Detroit's Kelly Davis. Both fell in the Round of 16. Another freshman, Jenny Rowan, dropped her opening match before defeating Louisville's Stephanie Velazquez, 6-2, 6-1, to reach the consolation quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Klauck and Young picked up an 8-2 win over a team from Detroit. The tournament continues through Sunday.
