FOR STARTERS:
The women's soccer team will hit the road for two BIG EAST contests this weekend. The Bearcats will take on defending BIG EAST champ , currently ranked 16th in the nation, on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. UC will then head to for its first ever meeting with the Friars on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
BEARCAT BITES:
UC snapped a three-match losing streak with a 0-0 tie against DePaul on Sept. 25 at Gettler Stadium.
UC has shutout three opponents this season.
Goalkeeper Sherry Slye's three shutouts this season have tripled her career total .
The Bearcats have scored eight goals in 10 matches this season. UC scored just 11 goals in 18 matches in 2004.
Freshman Jenn Johannigman leads the Bearcats with three goals this season.
The 0-0 tie against DePaul was UC's first scoreless draw since Oct. 25, 2002 against .
ABOUT THE BEARCATS:
fell, 4-0, at defending national champion Notre Dame on Sept. 23. Notre Dame scored twice in each half in sending UC to its third straight defeat. The NCAA's leading goal scorer, Kerri Hanks, added to her total with a pair of tallies in the contest. On Sept. 25, and DePaul played to a scoreless tie, snapping the Bearcats' three-match losing streak. UC goalkeeper Sherry Slye made a career-high 12 saves in posting her third shutout of the season.
The Bearcats are led offensively by freshman Jenn Johannigman, who has scored three goals for six points. Andrea Haney has netted a pair of goals for UC. Junior Becky Imhoff and freshman Lindsey Noteboom lead the Bearcats with two assists each. Slye holds a 1.31 goals against average with three shutouts and has made 50 saves.
Head coach Meridy Glenn, in her 23rd year with the Bearcats, holds a 241-159-31 ledger during her tenure. She is 0-1-1 all-time against and will face for the first time.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES:
The defending BIG EAST champions, UConn enters the weekend with a 7-2-1 record overall and a perfect 3-0-0 slate in conference action. The Huskies are ranked as high as No.12 nationally (Soccer America) after topping No. 20 Marquette, 2-1, in and winning at , 1-0 in overtime.
Freshman Elizabeth Eng, who leads UConn with four goals and 11 points, was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after scoring both Huskie goals against . Brittany Taylor is tied with Eng for the team goal-scoring lead. Eng, Kristi Lefebvre and Meghan Schnur have each tallied three assists to lead the squad. The goalkeeper platoon of Stephanie Labbe and Megan Jessee has combined to post a 0.92 goals against average and five shutouts.
Head coach Len Tsantiris, the second women's coach in NCAA history to win 400 matches, is in his 25th season at UConn. The 1997 National Coach of the Year holds a 423-112-28 (.776) overall record. Tsantiris is 1-0-1 against .
UC-CONNECTICUT SERIES HISTORY:
The Bearcats and Huskies have met twice, but not since 1985. In the last match-up, UConn topped UC, 2-0, in in 1985. Prior to that, the Bearcats and Huskies played to a 0-0 draw at in 1983. The two teams meet as conference foes for the first time.
SCOUTING THE FRIARS:
The Providence Friars, owners of a four-match winless streak, head into the weekend with a 3-5-1 overall record and an 0-2-1 conference mark. The Friars are 0-3-1 over their last four matches and have not scored since a 2-1 win against Quinnipiac on Sept. 11.
On Sept. 23, PC played the visiting South Florida Bulls to a 0-0 draw. then fell, 2-0, at No. 20 Marquette on Sept. 25.
The Friars have been stingy defensively, allowing only 10 goals in nine matches, but have scored just seven themselves. Kelly Determan and Kathryn Mahoney have each tallied two markers. Determan leads the team with five points (2G, 1A). Goalkeeper Ashley Fedyshyn has played every minute between the pipes this season, holding a 1.08 goals against average and posting two shutouts.
Head coach Jim McGirr is in his first season at . A former Villanova assistant, McGirr holds a 3-5-1 record in his first stint as a head coach.
UC-PROVIDENCE SERIES HISTORY:
New conference opponents, the Bearcats and Friars will meet for the first time in 2005.
UC PICKED EIGHTH:
The Bearcats were chosen to finish eighth in the BIG EAST's Division B in a preseason poll of the BIG EAST head coaches. Defending national champ Notre Dame was unanimously selected to capture the Division B crown, while was tabbed as the Division A favorite. Fellow NCAA qualifiers and Villanova were selected to finish second in Divisions A and B, respectively.
SLYE SAVES:
Bearcat goalkeeper Sherry Slye posted a career-high 12 saves in her shutout of DePaul on Sept. 25. Slye is second in the BIG EAST with 50 saves through 10 matches. With eight regular season matches remaining, Slye has an outside chance at the single season school saves record, which stands at 127. She would have to average 9.75 saves per match to eclipse Kim Cowan's mark, set in 1991.
"FRESH" STARTS:
Five freshmen have made significant contributions through the first 10 matches of the season. Forwards Jenn Johannigman and Kristin May, along with midfielder Lindsey Noteboom and defender Kim Sykes have started each match for the Bearcats. Midfielder Chelsea Kindschuh started the first nine. Johannigman leads UC with three goals and six points. Kindschuh is tied for third on the team with one goal and one assist for three points. Sykes scored the game winner in UC's 1-0 victory against on Aug. 28. Noteboom has tallied two assists, while May has added one.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES:
Through 10 matches this season, the Bearcats have scored eight goals. In 2004, UC scored a total of 11 goals in 18 matches. The Bearcats were shutout 11 times in 2004. They were shutout for the first time against on Sept. 15.
UP NEXT:
UC will continue its four-match road swing by traveling to Villanova on Oct. 7. The Bearcats then head to on Oct. 9 before finishing out the regular season schedule with four matches at Gettler Stadium.
