SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati men's cross country team finished 18th in a field of 25 teams in the Blue Division race at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday afternoon. Junior Taylor Garvin was Cincinnati's first runner across the finish line. The Bearcat women took third place in the Gold Division race, led my senior Karen Berling.
The Bearcat men's squad faced their toughest competition of the season, going up against several nationally ranked teams. Although Cincinnati failed to pull any upsets, the team was victorious over local rivals Miami (Ohio) and Ohio University, which placed 19th and 21st, respectively.
Garvin continued as the team's top runner by completing the five-mile course in a time of 24:50, placing 48th. As always, sophomore John Dixon was close behind, finishing seven seconds later in 55th place. Also scoring were juniors Kevin Schwarz (25:41) and Brad Neumann (25:46), and freshman Rick King (25:47).
The men from the University of Arizona earned their first Notre Dame Invitational team title. Chris Solinsky from the University of Wisconsin took the individual victory in 23:21.
UC's women's team was a strong force in a field of 24 schools. Leading the Gold Division was Michigan in first (60 points), followed by Edinboro (173), and Cincinnati in third (181).
Each of the Bearcats responded to the meet's high competition by running season-best times. Berling returned to her top spot on the squad by placing 25th overall in a time of 18:40. Junior Cristy Doll (18:48) followed closely in 29th place. Freshman Ellen Knopf (18:52), and sophomores Nichole Leslie (18:55) and Jennifer Hannen (19:05) rounded out the team's scoring.
Indiana State's Laura Engle earned the individual title, finishing the 5K course in 17:40.
The Bearcats will compete next on Friday, Oct. 7 at the All-Ohio Championships in Delaware, Ohio where they will try to solidify their place as the state's top cross country power.
