CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team dropped its fourth straight match this afternoon, 3-2, in overtime, against South Florida at Gettler Stadium. Despite outshooting the Bulls, 28-10, and controlling play for the majority of the contest, the Bearcats fall to 3-10-3 on the season and 1-7-1 in the BIG EAST. USF earned its first conference win, improving to 6-6-3 overall and 1-5-3 in BIG EAST play.
The Bearcats held possession for the majority of the first half, but could not capitalize on several scoring opportunities. UC held a 15-5 edge in shots in the half, and took four corner kicks to USF's one. But a defensive lapse in the 21st minute allowed the Bulls to get on the board first. A give-and-go between Megan Morton and Ebony Robinson led the Morton's first goal of the season at the 20:56 mark.
As the match wore on, continued to hold possession and create opportunities. The Bearcats appeared to get on the board early in the second half when a crossing pass was fumbled by USF goalkeeper Casey Garrett. 's Heather Haney (/Hilliard Davidson) bumped into Garrett and poked home the loose ball. The officials waived the goal off, instead whistling Haney for a foul.
The Bearcats would not be denied, however, as Haney made amends for the foul call, by scoring her second goal in as many matches after Becky Imhoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) crossed the ball to the left side of the box where an unmarked Haney fired a shot past Garrett at the 73:36. Imhoff was credited with her sixth assist of the year.
UC would take the lead just 2:20 later as Jen Leiter (, /) scored her first career goal off a free ball just outside of the UC box. Leiter gathered in the free ball and blasted a shot past Garrett to the far post.
settled in defensively, sitting on the one-goal lead. But another defensive lapse allowed USF to knot the match in the 85th minute. A long pass down the left side by Jenny Mulvihill found the foot of Katie Reed who dribbled in alone and beat Sherry Slye (/Roger Bacon) for the equalizer.
At the end of regulation, the Bearcats held a 25-8 edge in shots, including 13-6 in shots on goal, but saw a 2-2 score on the board.
The Bearcats had a few good scoring chances in overtime, one on a point blank opportunity after a cross by Haney. UC was unable to capitalize on its chances in the extra frame and the Bulls made them pay.
In the 99th minute, Ebony Robinson sent a cross to the near side which Morton headed to the near post. Slye made a diving stop, but was unable to control the ball and watched it trickle over the goal line, giving USF its first conference victory.
UC has scored 15 goals this season after scoring just 11 in 18 matches in 2004. The Bearcats have scored five goals in their last two matches.
