CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team was unable to overcome an early two-goal deficit, and fell, 2-1, against Syracuse tonight at Lampe Athletics Complex. UC dropped its second-straight BIG EAST match in falling to 7-5-2 overall (4-2-2 BIG EAST). Syracuse improves to 6-6-2 overall and 2-5-1 in conference action.
The Orange scored twice in the first 6:32 of the match. SU's Ezra Prendergrast one-timed an Isaac Collins corner kick just 0:57 into the match, staking the Orange to a 1-0 lead. It was the quickest goal allowed by the Bearcats this season. SU's Richard Asante put the Orange on top by a pair of goals with a 25-yard blast after intercepting a Cincinnati pass.
The Bearcat defense settled in and allowed just four other shots in the half, going into halftime with a 7-6 lead in shots and 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
UC got on the board in the 67th minute on a Sam Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) penalty kick. Syracuse was called for a foul in the box and Miller drilled the ensuing penalty kick into the lower right corner for his third goal of the season, drawing the Bearcats to within 2-1.
Despite outshooting the Orange 10-3 in the second half and 17-9 in the match, Cincinnati was unable to post the equalizer. Syracuse goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia made 11 saves on the night, turning away several Bearcat chances.
Cincinnati has lost three straight matches after matching a school record with a seven-match unbeaten streak between Sept. 16 and Oct. 5 (5-0-2).
The Bearcats will head upstate on Oct. 19 for a non-conference match against the Bowling Green Falcons. Kickoff from Cochrane Field is set for 3 p.m.
