CINCINNATI, Ohio--Former all-conference selection and two-year starter Steve Pickerell won the University of Cincinnati's Alumni Home Run Derby, held as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities on Friday night in the UC Baseball Stadium.
Pickerell, a former catcher and current minor leaguer in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization, blasted five long balls in the finals to top Mark Haske's total of four. Haske, who played for the Bearcats in 2005, is now playing professional ball for a Detroit Tigers minor league affiliate.
A total of 28 former Bearcats took part in the festivities, including current Boston Red Sox infielder Kevin Youkilis. The three-round competition was played before a nice crowd on a beautiful fall evening in Cincinnati. Former outfielder and pitcher Aaron Moll served as the master of ceremonies for the event.
Pickerell became the second straight former catcher to win the derby after Chris Hamblen won the first ever edition in the fall of 2004.
