BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Kenny Anaba (Westerville, Ohio/Worthington Christian) scored the lone goal of the match as the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team topped Bowling Green, 1-0, this afternoon in non-conference action at Cochrane Field. The Bearcats snap a three-match losing streak and improve to 8-5-2 overall, while Bowling Green falls to 2-13-1 on the season.
Bowling Green controlled the first several minutes of the match before the Bearcats got themselves organized and began to play in the Falcon zone. The Bearcats held a 9-1 edge in shots in the half, but were unable to crack the scoreboard.
UC had several dangerous chances in the stanza, including an Omar Cummings (Old Harbour, Jamaica/Cincinnati State) free kick that sailed through the legs of several players on its way through the box. A few minutes later, Mike Dwyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) sent a perfect cross in front of Falcon keeper Paul Shoemaker and onto the foot of Anaba. His shot was blocked by Shoemaker and quickly cleared by the Bowling Green defense.
Anaba got the Bearcats on the board in the 54th minute after taking a feed from Dwyer in the box and blasting a left-footed shot past Shoemaker for his seventh goal of the season. Anaba has now scored in six of his last eight matches. Cummings played the ball into Dwyer, who found Anaba streaking in on the right side. Cummings was credited with his fourth assist, while Dwyer earned his third helper of the season.
The Bearcats continued to pressure the Bowling Green defense, but were unable to add on. For the match, UC outshot the Falcons, 17-2, and were never truly threatened on the defensive side. Bowling Green's few chances came on restarts and corner kicks, of which the Falcons tallied six. The physical match ended with 43 total fouls being whistled.
John-Michael Boggs (Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence Dunbar) made his first appearance of the season and second career start in goal. He recorded the shutout, UC's fourth, without making a save. Boggs made his first career start in 2004 against Louisville Green, holding the Cardinals scoreless over the first 45:00 minutes before giving way to regular keeper Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin).
Cincinnati returns home for a BIG EAST matchup against Villanova on Oct. 22. Kickoff between the Bearcats and Wildcats is set for 7 p.m.
