PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Freshman Kristin May (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) scored her first career goal to lead the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team to its first win as a member of the BIG EAST Conference this afternoon, a 1-0 victory against Providence. May tallied the lone goal of the match in the 67th minute, improving the Bearcats to 3-6-3 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play. Providence falls to 3-7-1 overall, with an 0-4-1 conference mark.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, but UC held a 9-5 advantage in shots and a 2-0 lead in corner kicks, pressuring a Providence defense that was up to the task through the first 45 minutes.
After an unventful series of attacks for both squads, May found herself alone just outside the box at the 66:21 mark . The freshman tucked a left-footed rocket inside the lower left post and past a diving Ashley Fedyshyn for her first career tally, giving UC the lead.
May's score would prove to be the game-winnner as Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) made four saves to record her fourth shutout of the season.
"We are extremely pleased to get a win on the road," head coach Meridy Glenn said. "It is always a difficult thing to win a conference road game. We have another road trip next weekend and we are going to get ready for that."
That road trip will include matches at Villanova on Oct. 7 and at Georgetown on Oct. 9. The Bearcats and Wildcats will square off at 3 p.m. while the UC-GU match will kickoff at 4 p.m.
