SETTING THE SCENE: After cancelling its own Fall Classic scheduled for Oct. 31-Nov. 1, the University of Cincinnati men's golf team has added the Dayton Fall Invitational to its schedule. The one-day, 18-hole tournament will take place on Oct. 31 at the historic NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio. Action gets underway at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: A total of 12 squads from eight schools in the Midwest make up the field for the 2005 Dayton Fall Invitational. Like the Bearcats, Butler, Dayton and IUPUI will field "A" and "B" squads for the event, with Cedarville, Cleveland State, Findlay and Robert Morris filing single entries. The NCR Country Club, site of the 2005 U.S. Senior Open, will serve as the host course, with 18 holes on tap, beginning with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. Cincinnati competed in last year's edition of the event, tying for fourth in the team standings, with Adam Fluty leading the way in a tie for eighth. Oakland took top honors in the team standings.
LAST TIME OUT: Geoff Newman finished in the top-five and Adam Fluty shot a final round 70 to lead the Bearcats to a third place finish at The 2005 Tillinghast. Newman carded a round two score of 72 to finish fifth and tally his second straight top-five finish. Fluty overcame an opening round 82 to end tied for 14th, matching his low round of the year along the way. In the team standings, UC combined for a round two score of 300 to end the tournament in third place at 609. BIG EAST rival and tournament host St. John's took the team title with a 591, while another BIG EAST member, Villanova, took second at 602.
ON FIRE: Sophomore Geoff Newman has been the Bearcats' hottest player as of late, having recorded back-to-back top-five finishes. After not playing in the first two tournaments of the year, Newman posted a career-low 69 to tie for the top spot at the Krump Kup. The former walk-on followed that up with rounds of 76 and 72 to finish fifth at The 2005 Tillinghast. Newman's tournament win was also a first for the UC Men, as it represented the first time since Jim Herman in 1999 that the Bearcats had a tournament victory.
NEW ADDITION: The Bearcat roster increased by one following fall tryouts as junior Jacob Patterson was added to the fold. Patterson is a local product, having played and graduated from Loveland High School.
