ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. -- The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams opened the 2005-06 season this afternoon at the Oakland Golden Grizzly Quadrangular. The women's squad posted an undefeated start to its season, winning seven event crowns in topping Wayne State and UW-Milwaukee, and tying host Oakland. The men's squad fell to Oakland, but outscored Wayne State and UW-Milwaukee.
Senior Ann Degenstein (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), an NCAA qualifier in two events in 2005, has picked up where she left off last season, winning the 200 freestyle (1:52.54) and 200 butterfly (2:03.33). Newcomer Annelie Jonsson (Skurup, Sweden/Osterportskolan) captured two individual titles, winning both the 200 breaststroke (2:21.77) and the 200 IM (2:07.55). Also winning individual titles on the women's side were Paola Rivas (Mexico City, Mexico/Mission Viejo) in the 1,000 free (10:23.13) and Randi Vogel (Maineville, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) in the 200 backstroke (2:05.31). The women's 400 freestyle relay squad finished first, clocking in at 3:34.44.
The men's team posted four first-place finishes, including a 400 freestyle relay victory. Senior David Gustavsson (Aby, Sweden/Ebersteinska), a 2004-05 CSCAA Academic All-American, won the 200 IM in 1:54.08. Freshman Bjorn Mates (Eislingen, Germany/Wirtemberg Gymnasium) captured the 200 backstroke in 1:50.61, while sophomore Marcel Kleiner (Heilbronn, Germany/Hohen Staufen Gymnasium) rounded out the UC winners, grabbing the 200 freestyle title in 1:40.62.
The Bearcats will next hit the pool when the women's team travels to Toledo for a dual meet against the Rockets on Nov. 4.
