VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision against Villanova this afternoon in a steady rain at the Villanova Soccer Stadium. Freshman Jenn Johannigman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) scored her team-leading fourth goal for UC, which falls to 3-7-3 overall (1-4-1 BIG EAST). Villanova stayed unbeaten in BIG EAST play, improving to 3-0-3 in conference action. The Wildcats are 7-3-4 overall.
VU got on the board just 10:43 into the contest after Lindsey Finnegan headed in her fifth goal of the year. After Kaley Guthrie played the ball into teammate Nikki Mabery, Mabery touched a header to Finnegan, who kept the ball in the air with a header into the left corner.
Johannigman posted the equalizer in the 23rd minute after a scramble in front of the Villanova goal. Lindsey Noteboom (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) hooked a corner kick into the box, and the ball was batted around, with an initial Johannigman shot blocked. Becky Imhoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) regained possession for UC and flicked the ball to Johannigman, who slid her shot past Wildcat keeper Jillian Loyden to knot the match at 1-1.
The first half came to a close with the match knotted at one. The Wildcats held a slim 10-8 advantage in shots and both squads took three corner kicks.
Villanova took control of the match in the second half, outshooting UC, 14-2, in the stanza. Despite four second-half saves from Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon), the Wildcats broke on top in the 83rd minute. Nicole Coia took a pass from Laura Koch at the top of the box, and buried her second goal of the year to produce the final margin.
Villanova outshot the Bearcats, 24-10, in the match. Slye made eight saves.
UC will head to Washington, D.C. for its first-ever meeting with Georgetown on Oct. 9. The Bearcats and Hoyas will kick off at 1 p.m. ET at North Kehoe Field.
