SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati men's golf team will wrap up its fall season as well as gauge its status in the BIG EAST when it competes in the BIG EAST/Mid-American Conference Challenge this weekend. The tournament, to be held at the Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Fla., will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: A total of 11 teams, including seven from the BIG EAST, will converge on the Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Fla. for the BIG EAST/MAC Challenge. The 54-hole, two-day event gets underway on Saturday (Nov. 5) with 36 holes of play, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The final 18 holes will kick off at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. Marquette will serve as tournament host and will be joined in the tournament field by UC, Connecticut, DePaul, Marquette, St. John's, South Florida and Villanova from the BIG EAST and Akron, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois and Ohio representing the MAC.
LAST TIME OUT: Three Bearcats finished in the top-10, helping the Bearcats to a second place finish at the Dayton Fall Invitational, played at the NCR Country Club on Oct. 31. Freshman Alberto Fernandez paced the Bearcats, with a career-best seventh place finish after shooting a round of 78. Juniors Geoff Newman and Joe Young tied for 10th after each shot a 79. The team standings showed the Bearcats in a season-best second after their round of 316. UC's "B" squad also competed in the tournament, finishing 11th at 343.
ON FIRE: Sophomore Geoff Newman has been the Bearcats' hottest player as of late, having recorded three straight top-10 finishes, including a pair of top-fives. After not playing in the first two tournaments of the year, Newman posted a career-low 69 to tie for the top spot at the Krump Kup. The former walk-on followed that up with rounds of 76 and 72 to finish fifth at The 2005 Tillinghast and a 79 to gather 10th at the Dayton Fall Invitational. Newman's tournament win was milestone for the UC Men, as it represented the first time since Jim Herman in 1999 that the Bearcats had a tournament victory.
MAKING IMPROVEMENTS: The Bearcats enter this weekend's play trying to wrap up their fourth straight top-three team finish. After recording just two top-fives and only a single top-two finish last year, UC has recorded three in a row this fall. UC started the run with a second place finish at the Krump Kup, before finishing third at the 2005 Tillinghast. Most recently, the Bearcats were second in last week's Dayton Invitational.
