REGIONAL RUN: The University of Cincinnati cross country teams will travel to Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday, Nov. 12, to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships. Held at the Indiana Cross Country Course on the Indiana University campus, the meet will decide the region's representatives at the NCAA Championships later this month. The men's race is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., followed by a 12:15 p.m. start for the women.
2005 GREAT LAKES FIELD: Cincinnati will compete against some of the best of the region when they face the field of 34 teams. The Bearcats will see some familiar foes in BIG EAST teams Marquette and Notre Dame, as well as local rivals Xavier, Miami (Ohio), Ohio University, Dayton, and Ohio State. The men's field will include the nation's No. 1-ranked squad, Wisconsin (Nov. 1).
Senior Karen Berling and junior Kevin Schwarz will be the top returnees from the 2004 Great Lakes Regional Championships. Recording a time of 22:12 and placing 89th overall, Berling was Cincinnati's second finisher behind Ruth Limo. Schwarz, who was 64th overall, was the top finisher for the Bearcats, posting a time of 31:56. Junior Taylor Garvin is the only other returning member of the men's 2004 team.
SUPRISING SIXTH: The Bearcat men posted an amazing team finish at their first BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 28. Despite injuries and illness, the squad placed sixth in one of the country's most competitive conferences. The juniors led the attack with Schwarz (25:20) as the first Cincinnati runner across the finish line in 24th place. Brad Neumann (25:57) had his best race of the season, bettering his previous top 8K time by nearly two minutes.
KINGS OF THE CONFERENCE: Freshman twin brothers Rick and Randy King left their marks on the BIG EAST Conference when both placed among the top 10 freshmen in the championship race. As Cincinnati's fourth scorer, Rick (26:10) finished 44th overall and was the sixth-ranked newcomer in the conference. Randy (26:59) placed 61st overall and 10th among freshmen.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: Although their tie for 10th place was less than what they were expecting at the conference championships, the Cincinnati women have plenty to work with in the future. Senior Berling (22:23) was the Bearcats' top finisher, but freshman Megan Knapp and sophomore Nichole Leslie were close behind. Knapp recorded her third straight scoring performance by finishing the 6K course in 23:03. Her 48th-place finish also put her among the BIG EAST's top freshman. Leslie, who also posted a time of 23:03, was third for the Bearcats and 11th among sophomores.
UP NEXT: The 2005 cross country season will conclude with the NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 21, in Terre Haute, Ind.
