CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The NCAA has ruled that University of Cincinnati freshman Abdul Herrera is eligible to practice and participate with the Bearcats but is not eligible to play during the 2005-06 season.

Herrera, who had been held out of practice and competition since the beginning of preseason practice while his eligibility was under review, began practicing with the team on Thursday.

The NCAA ruled that Herrera fulfilled the requirements of a partial qualifier and was eligible to receive an athletic grant-in-aid and be a part of the basketball program. He will be eligible to compete next season, providing he makes academic progress, and will have four seasons of eligibility remaining.

A 6-10, 255-pound center, Herrera averaged 19.4 points and 15.9 rebounds last season as a senior at South Miami (Fla.) Senior High. He is a native of Panama who first became involved in organized basketball when his family moved to Miami his freshman year.
