CINCINNATI, Ohio--The University of Cincinnati volleyball team, under the leadership of head coach Reed Sunahara, has signed local standouts Jamie Frey and Katey Schroeder to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period which began this week. Both prep stars will join the Bearcat roster for the 2006 season.

Frey is a 5-8 outside hitter and libero who will join UC from volleyball power Roger Bacon High, while Schroeder is a 6-3 middle blocker who will graduate from McNicholas High. Schroeder is a product of the same high school that produced three-year UC starter and current senior Maria Pongonis.

"We were able to sign two of the best Cincinnati kids out there and we are happy to keep some talented local players at home," Sunahara stated. "Jamie exhibits outstanding ball control and Katey will make us bigger and more physical at the net. Both are really good athletes who will help with the development of our program."

Frey has been a three-time member of the all-conference squad at Roger Bacon, including two straight first team honors. After leading her team to a state championship and a No. 3 national ranking, Frey was chosen third team All-Ohio this year. On the club level, Frey helped the Cincy Classic win a national championship in 2002, while helping Team Z earn a No. 3 ranking this year.

Schroeder is a three-time all-state performer at McNicholas High, including a first team nod this year. She is ranked 96th in the nation among prepvolleyball.com's Senior Aces. Schroeder, also a first team all-conference selection, has helped McNicholas to three straight district championships, while earning third on the national club level with Team Z.

The Bearcats are competing in the BIG EAST Tournament this week, facing fifth-seeded St. John's on Friday at 10 a.m. UC, seeded fourth for its first-ever appearance in the tourney, has an 18-11 record this season.
