CINCINNATI, Ohio---The first two games of the 2005 Red/Black World Series for the University of Cincinnati baseball team are in the books and the Red Team holds a two games to none lead after a pair of convincing wins over the weekend. The squad opened the series with a 16-6 win and followed that triumph up with a 16-7 victory.
In game one, newcomer Nick Maragas was the hero as he totaled six RBI, including a fourth-inning grand slam against Dan Osterbrock. A total of seven Red Team hitters had RBI, with Jon DeLuca finishing with three and Logan Parker two.
On the mound in the opener, sophomore Adam Calez picked up the victory, working three innings and striking out two. Calez pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the second inning.
The Black Team finished game one with eight hits, with Neall French, Jack Nelson and Kyle Rapp accounting for two each. One of French's hits was a solo home run in the seventh inning off of Matt Heber. Osterbrock was tagged with the game one loss for the Black Team.
Sunday's game two was another monster offensive performance for the Red Team, with Parker showing the way. The senior 1B finished with two runs, five RBI, a double and a monstrous three-run homer over the newly installed viedoboard in right center field. DeLuca added two more RBI, as did LaFringe Hayes who also homered.
Kevin Schrader was untouchable on the mound for the Red Team, facing 13 batters in four innings of work, allowing no hits or walks, striking out three and hitting one batter. Steve Blevins took the loss for the Black Team.
French had another solid offensive performance for the Black squad, driving in two runs with a double. Brian Szarmach added two hits and two RBI in the defeat.
The Red/Black World Series will wrap up with the final three games this weekend. Game three will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, with a 1 p.m. first pitch set for both Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the event, held in the UC Baseball Stadium, is free and open to the public.
