CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Marge and Charles J. Schott Foundation has made a generous donation of $2 million to the University of Cincinnati's Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village project for upgrading UC's athletic facilities.
Varsity Village is a $100-plus million upgrade of UC's athletic facilities. Part of the project involved the construction of a new, 3,300-seat baseball stadium, which opened at the end of the 2004 season.
"Bob Goin's persistent communication displaying his passion, leadership and vision for the department of athletics was a major reason for this gift to the Varsity Village project," stated Bob Martin, spokesperson for the Schott Foundation.
"In response to the generosity of the Schott Foundation, the baseball stadium at UC will be named in honor of Marge Schott," stated Bob Goin, who retired as UC's director of athletics on Dec. 1. "The naming display will also include the phrase, `The Lady Loved Baseball', as a lasting memorial to her love for youth and baseball."
Marge Schott was a well-known Cincinnati philanthropist who held controlling interest in the Cincinnati Reds from 1985 to 1999. She passed away in March, 2004, leaving the majority of her estate to the foundation.
